I recently completed this prop as part of a CGMA course to brush up on my modelling skills. I'd been wanting to recreate Gary Vanaka's beautiful depiction of the Thievius Raccoonus from the Sly Cooper series in 3D for some time and this was the perfect opportunity! The Sly Cooper franchise holds a very special place in my heart!

The CGMA course was a lot of fun and I learned some cool tricks in Maya that definitely helped speed up my workflow. During the 6 week course, it became apparent that it was heavily oriented toward a film/animation production workflow, which wasn't concerned about high polycounts or texturing limitations. I knew that I wanted my final result to be game-friendly, so with this in mind, I opted to have my entire prop share only one 4k texture sheet and created my meshes being conscious of the fact that I'd need to reduce the polycounts after the course ended. A huge thanks to https://www.artstation.com/albertojr for his instruction of this class!

This prop was modelled and UV'd in Maya, textured in Substance Painter, and baked and rendered in Marmoset Toolbag.

I added these animated sparkles by using simple keyframes to scale the planes inside of Marmoset!

I thought it might be fun to share a timelapse of screenshots I took at various stages throughout this project.
